Associate Veterinarian
INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this position is to maintain animal health by diagnosing and treating diseases and injuries. The Associate Veterinarian works under the direct guidanceand supervision of the owner doctor of Apple Valley Veterinary Clinic. The Associate Veterinarian is to make every effort to help improve the quality of care given to the patients of Apple Valley Veterinary Clinic.
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITES
- Examine animals to detect and determine the nature of diseases or injuries.
- Treat sick or injured animals by prescribing medication, setting bones, dressing wounds, performing surgery or other therapies.
- Inoculate animals against various diseases.
- Collect body tissue, feces, blood, urine or other body fluids for examination and analysis.
- Perform laboratory procedures and diagnostic tests, including parasitology, hematology and urinalysis.
- Operate diagnostic equipment, such as radiographic and interpret the resulting images.
- Administer anesthetics, perform surgery, and monitor patients during surgery and recovery with the assistance of the technical team.
- Follow discharge guidelines for hospitalized and post-surgery patients and treatment plan guidelines for clients to ensure proper patient treatment in the home environment including client follow up post hospitalization.
- Answer client questions and provide education on various aspects of animal care and treatment. Advise animal owners regarding sanitary measures, feeding and general care necessary to promote health of their pets.
- Educate the public about diseases that can be spread from animals to humans.
- Call back/follow-up with clients; recommend medical progress visits when appropriate.
- Humanely euthanize animals when it has been mutually agreed upon by the patient’s owner.
- Document actions by completing forms, reports, logs and patient records.
- Train and supervise team members who handle and care for animals as needed.
- Deal with clients and employees in a manner that shows sensitivity, tact and professionalism.
- Provide guidance and leadership to the healthcare team that will positively influence the level of care and service provided to the clients and patients of the clinic.
- Participate in business development as instructed by management and/or ownership.

Veterinary Technician
INTRODUCTION
The Veterinary Technician assists the doctors to the fullest possible extent, to help improve the quality of care given to the patients, and to aid the doctors in achievinggreater efficiency by relieving them of technical work at Apple Valley Veterinary Clinic. The Veterinary Technician assists in multiple procedures providing care for animals including physical examinations, dental procedures, surgical assistance, immunizations, euthanasia as well as client education, marketing and inventory maintenance. This position requires a working knowledge of pharmaceutical drugs, common diseases; their symptoms, means of transmission, treatment and prevention and other basic preventative health care recommendations. The Veterinary Technician assists the Receptionist and Veterinary Assistant at the front desk/reception area as needed. This is an overview of the position and the job responsibilities listed do not encompass the entire position. The Veterinary Technician is under the direct guidance and supervision of the veterinarians.
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Obtain, record and maintain patient histories.
- Instruct clients as to what they should do prior to bringing their pets in for procedures, how to care for their pets after discharge from the hospital, how to administer medications, etc.
- Utilize a fecal loop when necessary. Anticipate and prepare any medications or vaccines the doctor will need to treat the patient.
- Collect specimens, performroutine laboratory procedures and tests in hematology, biochemistry, chemistry, microbiology, urinalysis, and serology to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of animal health problems. Import results into patient’s medical record.
- Dispense and administer medications, vaccines, serums and treatments as prescribed by veterinarians.
- Administer fluids and blood products as prescribed by the veterinarian.
- Administer and monitor anesthesia under the direction of a veterinarian.
- Provide specialized nursing care for injured or ill animals.
- Prepare patients, instruments and equipment for surgery.
- Assure that monitoring and support equipment such as anesthetic machines, cardiac monitors, scopes and breathing apparatus are in good working condition.

Veterinary Assistant
INTRODUCTION
The Veterinary Assistant assists the veterinarians and technicians with patient care and treatment,monitors hospitalized pets, prepares prescriptions,performs routine in-house laboratory work, educates clients regarding veterinarycare and procedures, assists in the front desk/reception areaand assists with surgical procedures at Apple Valley Veterinary Clinic. The Veterinary Assistant operates under the supervision of the Hospital Manager, veterinarians and the Veterinary Technicians.
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Communicate with clients regarding the medical status of their pet. Provideaccurate information to clients concerning fees, hospital policies andprocedures, etc.
- Instruct clients as to what they should do prior to bringing their pets infor procedures, how to care for their pets after discharge from the hospital,how to administer medications, etc.
- Educate clients regarding preventive medicine and vaccination requirements.Recommend laboratory procedures such as pre-anesthetic profiles,geriatric screening, fecals, urinalysis, heartworm checks, FeLV testing, etc. Give clients handouts and educational materials to take home to furthertheir understanding of veterinary issues.
- Demonstrate warmth, courtesy and professionalism in all interactionswith clients. Exercise compassion and care in all interactions with patients.
- Restrain animals in a safe, efficient and compassionate manner duringexaminations and procedures. Know how to properly handle difficult orcontentious animals.
- Follow established procedures in order to assist veterinarians withexaminations and facilitate the flow of clients and patients through theout-patient clinic. Consult with veterinarians and technicians on a daily basis to plan eachday’s activities. Keep doctors apprised of potential problems, discussionswith clients, etc.
- Review medical records and notes made by the admitting receptionist inorder to discern the nature of the visit and any tests or procedures thatmay be needed.
- Greet clients and escort them and their pets into an exam room, if needed. Place thepatient on the exam table and prepare for the doctor to enter the room.Obtain basic information (weight, temperature, etc.) on the pet, if needed.
- Obtain any laboratory samples that may be needed from the pet or makesure that laboratory work is performed by another team member whilethe patient is still in the exam room. Utilize a fecal loop when necessary.Anticipate and prepare any medications or vaccines the doctor will need totreat the patient.
- If needed, notify the veterinarian when patients in the exam room are ready to beseen. Advise the veterinarian of the information already known such asthe nature of the visit, preventive procedures due, tests that are to berun, etc. Assist the veterinarian within the exam room by restraining theanimal, preparing forms, obtaining instruments, etc. Remain in the examroom until excused by the doctor.
- Ensure all procedures rendered during the visit are documented for properbilling. Ensure that all vaccinations, procedures, notes, etc. have been documentedin the medical record.
- Prepare theexam room for the next visit.
- Prepare specimens for outside laboratory. Obtain results from the laboratory and import results into medical record.
- Monitor laboratory supplies and order additional laboratory supplies asneeded.
- Assist veterinarians and technicians in taking, developing and maintaining radiographs following proper safety procedures.
- Assist in routine suture removals, nail trims, and weight checks. Applybandages and splints under the direction of the attending veterinarian or technician.
- Give injections, as directed by veterinarian – intravenous, intramuscular, and subcutaneous.
- Promote the practice’s products, programs and services.
- Accurately dispense prescription medications as directed by veterinarian.Prepare prescription labels and appropriately package medications. Ensurethat medications are added to the patient’s record and appropriatelycharged to the client.
- Follow DEA and OSHA guidelines. Document controlled drug logs anytimea controlled drug is used. Follow appropriate safety and handling ofhazardous materials. Follow established hospital safety guidelines regardingradiographs, controlled drugs, animal handling, etc.
- Clean and straighten exam rooms, treatment and lab areas. Restock examrooms with supplies as needed. Assist other team members to keep thepublic areas of the practice clean and well maintained. Clean and maintainall medical equipment as required.
- Demonstrate initiative and teamwork in everyday duties, assisting otherteam members within the practice.

The House Call Veterinary Technician/Assistant assists the doctors to the fullest possible extent, to help improve the quality of care given to the patients in a client’s home, and to aid the doctor in achievinggreater efficiency by relieving them of technical work during travelling of House Calls Veterinary Services and/or Apple Valley Veterinary Clinic. The Veterinary Technician assists in multiple procedures providing care for animals including physical examinations, dental procedures, surgical assistance, immunizations, euthanasia as well as client education, marketing and inventory maintenance. This position requires a working knowledge of pharmaceutical drugs, common diseases; their symptoms, means of transmission, treatment and prevention and other basic preventative health care recommendations. The Veterinary Technician serves as the Receptionist during travel in the car and setting up future appointments for. This is an overview of the position and the job responsibilities listed do not encompass the entire position. The Veterinary Technician is under the direct guidance and supervision of the House Calls veterinarian.
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

- Instruct clients as to what they should do prior to arriving to the client’s home, how to care for their pets after the visit, how to administer medications, etc.
- Anticipate and prepare any medications or vaccines the doctor will need to treat the patient.
- Collect specimens, performroutine laboratory procedures and tests in hematology, biochemistry, chemistry, microbiology, urinalysis, and serology to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of animal health problems. Import results into patient’s medical record (this often will involve uploading to the AVVC lab equipment at the end of the House call day).

WORK ENVIRONMENT

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Receive, handle and treat patients with skill, compassion and care including: monitoringduring anesthesia, administering fluids, assisting in diagnosing, surgery and general/specialized nursing care.
- Accurately perform and import laboratory tests.
- Accurately dispense and administer medications and vaccines.
- Input data into computer software system.
- Ability to observe animal appearance and activity for general physical condition,obvious signs of illness, disease and discontent.
- Regular attendance and timeliness are an essential function in order to fulfill therequirements of this position.
- Strong communication and client service skills. Considerable tact and diplomacyis required. Ability to work with clients and patients in a professional, friendly,hospitable manner.
- Work well with all team members and ensure that your actions support the hospital,the doctors and the practice philosophy.
- Perform general physical activities that require bending, standing, stooping, movingfrom room to room, sitting, talking and listening; may be required to walk or stand forlong periods of time; will use hands to manipulate, handle or feel; will reach withhands and arms.
